Pickpockets target women

SHOPPERS have been warned to be on their guard for teams of pickpockets following a spate of purse snatches in Leigh town centre.

Eight have been stolen during busy periods since the beginning of March from women aged between 40 and 80.

Police believe offenders working in twos are selecting victims using cash machines, with one either bumping into or distracting the victim while the theft takes place.

Thieves have also used stolen credit cards to withdraw money from cash machines where PIN numbers have been kept in purses with the cards.

Inspector Gareth Hughes of the Leigh Neighbourhood Policing Team said: "Shoppers can reduce the chances of having valuables stolen by following some simple safety tips. These include carrying handbags with the strap positioned across the body rather than over the shoulder and ensuring they are closed.

"It is also a good idea to keep purses out of sight in an inside buttoned pocket or to use a body belt, and records of PIN numbers should never be kept with bank cards."

Anyone with information regarding the thefts should contact the police on 0161 856 7225.

Alternatively, contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Barry, how come that in this report there is no description of the thieves in question? You, believe they are Leythers do you? Why and how do you draw this conclusion?
Obviously, you are not aware of the media's "political correctness" when it comes to reporting crimes, that, if it is indeed perpetrated by 'foreigners' then no description of them will be issued. This is the opposite to if they were 'white?'
Wakey, Wakey Barry!

Just one more thing Barry, when my wife called me on my mobile about 6 months ago, and this, whilst she was using the cash point in Leigh town centre, scared that she was being harrassed by two 'dirty' looking dark skinned individuals? Luck had it that I also was in town to help her out? These people were definately NOT leythers! Oh! and i'll add, why in our Big Brother is Watching you world could the CCTV not prevent these incidents occurring?

Can I just reiterate my earlier comment Barry?

Wakey, Wakey!

We are very tolerant individuals us Leythers, to point of being too apathetic! But, but, we are not fools? And we will only tolerate such actions to a certain point Barry!!

cctv cameras are a waste of time there should be police patrolling the area and removing anyone who looks like they are scum
