SCHOOLCHILDREN have taken part in an interactive workshop to commemorate the First World War.

St Joseph's Catholic Primary School was one of several schools that visited the Turnpike Centre in Leigh to learn about the contribution made by soldiers from the area.

Organised by the Schools Cultural Service, the pupils met with the reality of war through the horrors of fighting on the frontline and learnt about how the war started and the countries involved.

They took part in activities that involved learning how the wounded were treated, finding out about the war from first-hand accounts in diaries from the archives and considering how to remember fallen heroes by designing a memorial window.
