Peaky Blinders could make the leap to the big screen, according to series creator Steven Knight.

The hit drama series stars Cillian Murphy as a gangster in 1920s Birmingham, but show bosses could bring in Hollywood movie stars – and potentially even Julia Roberts.

Steven told the Radio Times: “We have always talked about it. We have always felt that in these days of the pot being stirred it would be an interesting thing to do. People say you don’t make the film until it is unpopular, but I don’t agree.”

He also told Digital Spy: “I think it’d be great to have a series, then a film, a series, a film… why not?”

Executive producer Caryn Mandabach hinted the film could include some big US movie stars.

“We did have a conversation about potentially doing a movie,” she said.

“There are many people in America that love Peaky Blinders and plenty of movie stars that want to be in the movie.

“We heard Julia Roberts wants to do it – but this is hearsay… I don’t really know for sure.”

However, Caryn insisted there was “no nothing” until the BBC show was commissioned for a fourth series, adding: “The TV show has to take precedence.”

The third series of Peaky Blinders begins on May 5 at 9pm on BBC Two.
