Nicole Kidman is said to be in "shock" after her father - prominent psychologist Tony Kidman - died suddenly in Singapore.

His death was confirmed by the University of Technology in Sydney (UTS), where he had worked as a researcher and practitioner for 43 years.

A spokeswoman for the Hollywood star said: "Nicole and her family are in shock by the sudden death of her father.

"She appreciates the outpouring of support and kindly requests privacy during this very difficult time."

Dr Kidman is reported to have been in Singapore to visit his other daughter, Antonia, and her family. Singapore's Tan Tock Seng Hospital said that a man in his 80s was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead earlier today, but no further details were released.

Reports have suggested he may have fallen.

Dr Kidman accompanied Oscar-winning actress Nicole on the red carpet at the Swisse Celebrate Life Ball in Melbourne in June.

She was in the UK just a week ago to promote her new film Before I Go To Sleep,

The university's vice chancellor, Attila Brungs, paid tribute today and said: "Tony has contributed greatly - as a colleague, as a researcher, and as a health practitioner. Tony will be missed by all at UTS."

Antonia Kidman, who has six children, has been a television presenter and producer.
