This year’s Strictly Come Dancing has been littered with sprained ankles, infections and the flaring-up of old injuries causing disruption to dance pairings and even the dance-off.

Laura Whitmore and Anastacia have both been forced to miss parts of the competition due to injury but they certainly aren’t the first to do so in the show’s history. Now in its 14th series, Strictly has seen its fair share of injuries.

Here, we look at some of the show’s most notable from across its fourteen-year history.

1. Denise Van Outen’s vigorous jive leaves her with whiplash

In 2012 the actress and presenter suffered “mild whiplash” in rehearsals after jiving with professional partner James Jordan. She visited a physio and was said to be “touch and go” about continuing in the show but eventually recovered to reach the final, losing out to Olympic gymnast Louis Smith.

2. Olympian Jade Johnson’s ligament injury

It was a double blow for Olympic long jumper Jade Johnson, who was not only forced to withdraw from Strictly in 2009 because of injury but also missed the 2012 Olympics after the ligament damage flared up again three years later.

3. Artem Chigvintsev dances on with fractured spine

One of the most remarkable Strictly injury stories comes from 2011 when professional Artem danced on without realising that he had fractured his spine. Artem sat out of training for a week while fellow pro Brendan Cole helped out his partner – Australian actress Holly Valance. Artem soon returned to the dance floor, with the pair leaving the show at the semi-final stage.

4. Actress Ali Bastian’s bruised foot

Bookies favourite in series 7, the former Hollyoaks actress left the show in the semi-final stage after falling down during training. Initially unable to walk, Ali managed to return to the dance floor but missing three days of training took its toll and the actress left the competition in the following show.

5. Carol Vorderman’s rumba tear

One the most dramatic injuries in the show’s history came in 2004 when former Countdown star Carol suffered a torn cartilage when her dance partner Paul Killick flung her backwards during their rumba routine. Impressively, she brushed off the injury to the unknowing public but was voted off on the same show.

6. Mark Benton’s dodgy knees

The Waterloo Road actor was seen with supports on his legs throughout series 11 and was unable to rehearse any lifts because of knee damage. Mark had to undergo injections to cope with the cartilage damage in both knees as he prepared to take part in the series. It didn’t seem to hinder his performances, though, the actor and partner Iveta Lukosiute made it to week ten before losing out to the public vote.
