IF there’s one thing that annoys me most about long-running soaps it’s their failure to maintain continuity.

It’s probably my biggest pet hate when it comes to Coronation Street, and they could quite possibly be currently airing the best example of how wrong it can go when previous plots are ignored.

After having not visited the Street for a while I tuned in by accident last night, after the programme was moved to Thursday this week for some football match or other —and I wish I hadn’t.

There were none other than devastated widow Maria Connor and Tony Gordon getting a little too close for comfort.

Has everyone forgotten that not too many weeks ago, Maria was willing to go to any lengths, including have the entire world think she was completely cuckoo, in her attempts to convince the police of something rather crucial in her life?

This man, the Scottish former factory owner, who she looks all set to move in with, was responsible for the murder of her husband and father of her unborn child.

It’s all very nice to have a new romance bubbling away but the writers must consider the history before getting carried away.

Maria wanted to kill Tony for what he’d done and now here she is falling for him.

I know they say there’s a fine line between love and hate — but this is ridiculous!
