Pick of the week

Robin Hood (Saturday, BBC One, 6.45pm) Saturday nights were simply no fun before Robin Hood and his merry men started warring with no end of baddies in Sherwood Forest.

And tonight, the show serves up a cracker.

Deep in the woods, Robin encounters a very jumpy Gisborne, who has escaped the clutches of his evil sister, Isabella, and the formidable Sheriff of Nottingham, as the medieval adventure continues.

Just as Robin and Gisborne take up arms against one another, tiny arrows pierce their necks and they fall comatose to the ground.

They awake at night to find themselves bound and held captive by an elderly, mysterious hooded leper, whose revelations will change their lives for ever and bind the mortal enemies in an uneasy truce. Their captor only agrees to give them back their liberty on condition that they work together to save someone in York who needs their help.

Bremner, Bird and Fortune: The Last Show Before the Recovery (Sunday, Channel 4, 7pm) The trio of acerbic funnymen are past-masters at making politicians squirm, so Westminster will be dreading the return of the unholy trio at a time of political crisis.

From the MPs’ allowances scandal to the cult of celebrity chefs and the Sachsgate affair, Rory Bremner, John Bird and John Fortune — with the help of Pauline McLynn and Frances Barber — provide a selection of satirical send-ups and sketches dealing with the issues that have been in the media spotlight for the past six months.

If the rumours are to be believed, this could be the final run of the hugely popular series, so now is the last chance to see what all the fuss is about. For the uninitiated, the show is almost entirely political, but in recent series different genres of sketches have been introduced.

Don’t miss it.

Fifth Gear (Monday, Five, 8pm) It’s Monday, and what better way to banish the back-to-work blues than to catch up with Tiff Needell and the Fifth Gear team?

In the first of a new series, resident daredevil Steve Truglia performs the most ambitious stunt the show has ever attempted, hoping to set a world record in the process. The so-called ‘death loop’ will see him attempt to drive round the biggest loop-the-loop ever made.

Back on terra firma, Formula One driver-turned-TV pundit David Coulthard meets up with Tiff for an extreme van-driving challenge.

With the cost of motoring soaring, Tim Shaw swaps his car for a tired old banger. In his video diary we see if living with such a distressed vehicle offers guilt-free, dirt-cheap motoring . . . or deep shame and embarrassment.

Other highlights include Tom Ford examining the new Citroen C3 Picasso, and there’s a bumper-to-bumper contest between the brand new Ford Focus RS and the Mitsubishi Evo X.
