Review: Heartbeat, ITV1

1:32pm Thursday 12th August 2010

I WENT up to Goathland recently and there seemed to be a distinct lack of crime going on — come 8 o’clock on a Sunday night, though, and it’s all happening.

It’s a good day out there unless you don’t like Heartbeat or the North Yorks Moors (I even bought a Ford Anglia fridge magnet with a flashing blue light).

It’s the last-ever series of Heartbeat and, despite a certain naffness about it, it does bring a bit of a warm feel to Sunday nights.

Life won’t be the same without Gina, David and Peggy, Vernon Scripps, Ventriss, Oscar and Lord Ashfordly.

The programme hasn’t changed much in 18 years: here we have Peggy trying to put some distance between dopey David and a temptress, who looks like a cross between Beth Ditto and Lisa Riley, while a big domestic dispute results in violence.

It all ends happily ever after, though, which isn’t always the case with Heartbeat — and soon it will end for good.
