Ruth Kelly opens first motorway car-share lane
|
| The Bolton West MP opened the new scheme this morning |
Transport Secretary Ruth Kelly has opened the UK's first motorway car-share lane.
The £5.33 million, 1.7-mile lane links the southbound M606 from Bradford to the eastbound M62 towards Leeds, bypassing a notoriously congested section where the two motorways merge.
The lane is open to vehicles carrying two or more people and is estimated that it will save road users an average of six to eight minutes per journey - 30 to 40 minutes a week for regular commuters.
More details HERE.

A 1.7mile car sharing Lane in Bradford! What dizzy heights of achievement for this high flyer!
What’s next, 3 more babies before her next ministerial appointment!

We don't need to think up overcomplicated traffic control measures to cut down on congestion.
As the British economy disappears down the pan, people will no longer be able to afford cars.

"She (Ruth Kelly) said: "This new lane offers motorists the opportunity to reduce both their journey times and their carbon footprints" Here we go again throwing our money at airbrain carbon footprint reducing schemes (Incidently unheard of in America) If 1.7 miles of motorway costs £5.33 million how much will 500 more miles cost?
six to eight minutes per journey
At a cost of £5.3 million ? Must be one hell of an important meeting. I'd like to see a breakdown of these figures.

Off they go, interrupting serious comment with the usual puerile guff.
If you don't believe this strategy will woirk why not offer up an alternative> Congestion is not going to go away, it will only get worse. Something needs to be done. I'm not sure this will works as in real terms the cost of motoring has fallen versus public transport and people like the convenience, comfort and privacy of their own ccar. Quite how you change that I don't know.
