MP backs campaign over driving bans

Driving bans for jailed motorists should begin once they are released from prison and not while they are serving their sentence, a Conservative MP said.
Shadow roads minister Robert Goodwill has backed a campaign started by Jan Woodward, from Billingham in County Durham, whose 19-year-old daughter Kelly was killed by a drink driver in July 2006.
At present offenders given prison sentences and driving bans can serve both at the same time, meaning that in some cases they can start driving again the day they are released.

Good Idea.
There's not many good Ideas come out of this government but this is one of them.
Ill be surprised if it makes it through though.

Time for a change in the law..there are too many idiots on the roads as it is..once time served ban should start running..what is the point in handing down a two year ban with a four year sentence..??

Anyone who causes a death by driving and is found to be over the limit should be banned for life, the family of any victim face a life sentence

ALL MPs should say the same as Robert Goodwill,to driving ban for life + a jail sentence; im sure it would ease ( a little pain )for the familys for there-LIFE SENTANCE;

An excellent idea I always thought it was pointless being banned whilst in prison.

And new bans should not run concurrently with bans currently being served, as in the case of Amir Khan - what a complete waste of taxpayers' money that trial was.

I've been saying this for years and road safety groups up and down the country have been agreeing with me. Why has this taken so long?

You might as well impose curfews on prisoners. It's be no dafter.

This "great new idea" will have to contend with "day releases" "compassionate leave" "early release on licence/tag/home curfew" - it also relies on the Prison Service updating the DVLA of the release date...
Far better the ban should commence immediately on sentence - but with an additional period equal to the time they are likely to serve in prison.
