Welcome to a green and pleasant land
VISITORS are sure of a blooming welcome to Atherton thanks to the efforts of green fingered residents.
Keith and Val Sumner, members of Atherton Environmental Projects, have agreed to tend a mini garden just before Schofield Lane to ensure that motorists know they are entering one of the most green and eco-minded parts of the borough.
A sign tells people that, thanks to the efforts of people such as the Sumners, the borough can boast of several top awards at the prestigious In Bloom ceremony.
Last year Wigan Council and its community and business partners scooped three prizes, and ensured a legacy of trees, bulbs and floral displays for all to enjoy.
Cllr Sue Loudon said: "We've always been eco-minded in Atherton and I am delighted that we're the first community to have these new signs. Thanks to people like Val and Keith, and the work of the group, we're really putting Atherton on the map."
The council is working with groups boroughwide to ensure that the 2008 bid for In Bloom is just as successful as last year and there are opportunities for individuals and businesses to get involved and contribute to the project in large or small ways.
Council street scene officer, Damien Jenkinson, adds: "I'm waiting to hear from green fingered and big hearted people. We're busy across the whole borough and really need to hear from you!"
