A COUPLE in their 60s suffered serious burns after their car burst into flames.

Fire crews from Leigh and Atherton were called to the scene in Warrington Road, Leigh, when a Range Rover caught fire at 10am on Saturday.

It is believed the dual fuel vehicle caught fire after being topped up with liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and the gas cylinder in the boot ignited.

The woman, aged 63, suffered burns to her head and face and the man, aged 67, had burns to his legs and hands.

The couple were taken to Wythenshawe Hospital for treatment, with the man transported by air ambulance.

The vehicle was destroyed and the blaze is being investigated by police and the fire service.
