BRITISH Paralympic gold medallist swimmer Heather Frederiksen will lead a world record attempt - and YOU can join her!

Heather, now living in Lowton and formerly of Clifton Street, Leigh, won Gold at the Beijing Olympics in 2008 and repeated her 100 metres backstroke success at London Olympics 2012.

The golden girl has also won a total of five silver medals and one bronze and has been made an MBE for her services in swimming.

Heather will head Leigh Rotary Club's part in the worldwide Swimathon challenge which aims to set a world record of getting as many swimmers as possible involved in one event during a 24 hour period.

"Our local event will take place at The Pelican Centre, Castle Street, Tyldesley on Saturday, February 23 between 12 noon and 1pm. Each swimmer will need to swim 100 metres in order to qualify," said Leigh Rotarian Ian Brogden.

Leigh Rotary Club hopes those taking part in the Tyldesley swim will donate 25 per cent of any sponsorship to their charity account. It is the intention of the Rotary Club to donate all moneys raised to “End Polio NOW”, a scheme to eliminate polio throughout the world.

The remaining 75% will go to the organisation or charity of the swimmers' choice.
