Foodbank volunteers delighted by shoppers’ donations at Tesco Atherton

Shoppers gave generously at weekend Foodbank collections at Tesco Atherton
GENEROUS shoppers dug deep to help those less fortunate than themselves.
Atherton and Leigh Foodbank volunteers were stunned by the response to their food donation appeal at Tesco Atherton on Saturday and Sunday.
“We would like to thank all the people for generously donating £250 in cash and one tonne of food,” said A&L Foodbank secretary Dave Hughes.
“This was our first collection and we had some 40 volunteers who helped collect donations over both days. Some did a full eight hours and we are grateful to them.
“Fewer than five per cent of foodbank clients are homeless – many are working families struggling to make ends meet.”
Tesco boosted donations by 30 per cent of the total collected.
Foodbank project manager Warren Dunne said the first food parcels would be distributed on March 6 at Atherton Parish Church.
He said: “Anybody that finds themselves in a crisis situation we will help. It could be working families.
“Perhaps someone’s vehicle needs repairs and it is a choice between having transport to get to work or buying food, maybe we can help. We try top signpost people to people who can help them.”
