Culcheth student chosen to promote caring role

THE Olympics have inspired a student to bring the legacy of the games into nursing.

Jessica Partington, aged 23, from Culcheth, has become one of only 50 national ‘care makers’.

She has been selected as an advocate for care, compassion, competence, communication, courage and commitment, the six Cs set out by NHS chief nursing officer Jane Cummings in her strategy for nursing and midwifery.

Jessica, a third year mental health student at Liverpool John Moores University, said: “The Games Makers were an absolute inspiration, and I volunteered to carry over that spirit into nursing so that all nurses can be proud of their profession.”

She was invited to meet health chiefs at a national conference. Former Culcheth High School pupil, Jessica, of Main Lane, Kenyon, said: “We had a message from Lord Seb Coe on how inspired and delighted he was that this vision for the Games Makers has continued.

“It gave me the incentive to apply for one of only three places to attend the NHS Leadership Academy in London for their programme for senior nurses.

“I am thrilled I have been chosen. It’s an honour.”

Jessica has the support of her mentors at 5 Boroughs Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, where she is on a placement.

Gill Briers, director of nursing, governance and performance, said: “We feel very lucky to have someone learning with us who is so committed to driving up the standards of care in nursing at a national level.”

Grahame Smith, from John Moores, said: “It’s wonderful that a mental health nursing student at this early stage in her career is having such a positive impact upon future health and social care provision.”
