THE pool at the Pelican Centre in Tyldesley was awash last Saturday when 66 swimmers of all ages took the plunge for charity.

The Rotary Club of Leigh's 'swimathon' was part of a worldwide event featuring fundraisers from 177 Rotary clubs, in 14 countries, all swimming at the same time.

From Journal-land the 66 each swam 100 metres to raise money for 16 different charities, worthy causes such as Cancer Care, End Polio Now, MacMillan Nurses, Headway and Breakthrough Breast Cancer.

Leigh Rotarian Ian Brogden, who organised the event said: “This was a magnificent turn-out which has brought together numerous local organisations for some good fun in the water.

"Each team raised money for their own particular charities and the total will be over £2,000, a tremendous effort.”

Proud Leigh Rotary President Jim Houghton said: “Our aim was to help local clubs and societies raise funds for their own organisations or charities. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the event.”
