Existing Wigan and Leigh housing tenants to get move priority
5:20pm Friday 22nd March 2013 in News
BEDROOM tax will be introduced next month prompting Wigan Council to implement a scheme giving existing council tenants who want to move home priority over new tenants.
The government’s under-occupancy tax will affect approximately 4,500 households in the borough, penalising them if they have a spare room.
Members approved the changes to the council’s housing allocation policy at Wigan Council's cabinet meeting.
Clr Chris Ready, cabinet member for housing, said: "The proposals refresh the existing policy, which was introduced in January 2011; taking changes such as the welfare reform and bedroom tax into consideration. It's important our policies reflect the wider, national context which is why we've suggested proposals that respond directly to issues affecting our tenants.”
The full policy will go to full council next month for final approval.
