A GANG forced the shutters of an Atherton shop this morning in a failed bid to steal a cash machine.
At around 1.40am police were called to the Costcutters store on Bolton Road, Atherton.
Offenders had broken the front shutters to the shop, before tying a cable round the ATM machine and attempted to haul it out of the shop using a stolen transit van.
They made off in an Audi MV, leaving the stolen van at scene. The ATM has been left behind damaged. At this stage it's not known if any money was actually taken.
Sgt John Connor said: "This was a reckless and ultimately unsuccessful attempt to steal an ATM.
"They may not have managed to take the cash machine but they did leave a trail of destruction in their wake.
"This type of burglary leads to a huge amount of disruption for store owners, staff and customers.
"As a result we have launched an investigation to trace the criminals who did this.
"If you saw a transit van or Audi M/V in the area in the early hours of this morning or you have any information then please call the police."
Anyone with information is asked to call police on 0161 856 7225 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
