Water suppliers United Utilities say tap water in Leigh is among the best in the world
9:20am Friday 30th August 2013 in News
HOUSEHOLDERS are being reassured that the water from their tap is among the best in the world.
United Utilities are warning people not to be pressurised into buying a water filter after the Journal contacted them following a reader’s complaint.
A woman from the Leigh area contacted the Journal after workmen persuaded her friend to have a filter installed in her home water supply and charged her £500 for the work.
She said: “My friend was told she needed a filter because of all the additives drinking water contains. She paid out £500 for what amounted to fitting another tap in her home. She was then offered a free shower filter if she recommended the service to someone she knew.”
Charmian Abbott, Water Quality and Public Health manager at United Utilities, said: “These filter sales people are causing unnecessary worry to residents. Tap water here in the North West is some of the best quality in the world. Every day we test the water every step of the way from the reservoir to the tap to make sure it meets the highest standards.
“People should not allow anyone to scare them into buying a water filter. If in doubt, contact us at United Utilities and we will be happy to reassure you.”
