Leigh supermarket to hold skills workshops to tackle youth unemployment
10:40am Wednesday 11th September 2013 in News
ASDA in Leigh are offering skills workshops in a bid to tackle youth unemployment.
The supermarket will hold sessions in September as part of a nationwide campaign Feeding Britain’s Future - Skills for Work Month 2013.
Youngsters will receive CV writing training, interview practice and see how the business is run to help them improve their chances of getting a job.
Martin Flower, the store manager, said: “There is a huge range of careers on offer across the retail industry, from departmental managers to pharmacists, but often it’s not given the consideration it deserves.
“By running the campaign in our store, we’re helping young people build their confidence and skills, whilst also showcasing the career opportunities available across Asda stores and the wider industry.”
The workshops will improve participants soft skills by going on a behind the scenes tour and hearing from an employee about their journey into employment.
It is the first initiative of its kind - giving young people access to farms, factories and stores as well as first-hand knowledge of the skills needed for a career in the food industry.
Anyone interested in the next workshop on September 19 at 2pm should visit a Jobcentre Plus for more details.
