Times have changed for employment at Leigh Spinners

This week the Journal’s Sophie Arnold goes behind the scenes at Leigh Spinners, which is celebrating 100 years in the town
EMPLOYERS at one time had to work really hard to attract people to come and work for them.
Manufacturing in Lancashire was booming and employees were hard to come by so companies would advertise the benefits they offered to people who came to work for them.
The advertisements, left, offered free transport and baths and boasted excellent canteens as well as sport pitches.
The mills were huge, Leigh Spinners’ employed 800 people at one point, and they would have cricket and football teams that would play against other mills in leagues.
