Residents need to register details to keep vote
9:30am Tuesday 1st October 2013 in News
RESIDENTS are being urged to register their details to secure their right to vote in the borough.
From this week each household will receive a voter registration from to fill out as part of Wigan Council’s Annual Canvass.
It is a legal requirement to complete the form and submit the up-to-date details by October 21.
Chief executive and electoral registration officer for Wigan Council Donna Hall said: It’s important that all of our eligible residents are registered so they don’t lose their right to vote, helping to shape the future of the borough they live in.
“The voter registration forms will be pre-printed with information we currently have, such as name and address. If no changes are needed it only takes a few minutes to let us know online, or by using a freephone number or by text. Residents should return their form by post if changes need to be made to the details we currently have.”
Failure to return the form could result in a fine of up to £1,000 and could affect your credit rating if you are not registered, potentially making it more difficult to apply for a mortgage, bank account or even a mobile phone contract.
