PATIENTS and staff from The Spinney in Atherton have won a national gardening award.
The Spinney cares for patients with personality disorders and mental illnesses and won the garden sculpture category in the Green Fingers competition for their Willow Dome.
The nationwide initiative, organised by the hospital provider Partnerships in Care, saw 40 hospitals entering four categories.
Rena Henderson, lead of occupational therapy and education at The Spinney said: "The gardening competition provided an excellent opportunity for staff and patients to work together to achieve positive results. Patients enjoyed taking part and there was a real sense of teamwork.
"Through working in the garden patients develop skills, knowledge and an interest in gardening. It creates a sense of community and encourages group as well as individual responsibility. This project in particular has taught patience, ingenuity, group and gardening skills.”
The Willow Dome is used as an eco-friendly and durable shelter for outdoor project work and relaxation.
