Former Leigh teacher and Tyldesley policeman received their British Empire medals

COMMUNITY champions Avis Freeman and PC Andy Wright are celebrating after receiving their British Empire Medal awards.
Great grandmother Mrs Freeman, from Lowton, and PC Wright who is based at Fred Longworth High School at Tyldesley, received their awards from Mr Warren Smith, the Lord Lieutenant of Greater Manchester at a ceremony in Bolton Town Hall.
The duo were named in the Queen’s Birthday honours list for services to the community.
Mrs Freeman has been a member of the Leigh Soroptomists for 30 years is keenly involved with environment and heritage groups.
The former biology teacher taught in London then at Leigh Girls’ Grammar School. She became head of lower school at Westleigh High then deputy head at Golborne High School. She is a governor at Golborne High and was formerly on the governing body at Lowton St Luke’s.
Looking forward to attending a garden party at Buckingham Palace next year Mr Freeman said: “I share the honour with everyone in the Leigh area. So many people do so much for the community.”
PC Wright’s award was the culmination of intense activity and involvement with the Nowt2Do project in which he led the way directing youngsters’ energy into worthwhile ideas.
A school-based police officer at Fred Longworth High in Tyldesley he has picked up a succession of community awards this year. The British Empire Medal is the latest.
He has received the Wigan Miner’s Lamp trophy in recognition of his personal effort both on and off duty in community care and was commended for his outstanding service on the Nowt2Do project by the Chief Constable of Greater Manchester.
PC Wright told the Journal: “It’s such an honour. To receive the British Empire Medal is just fantastic and it looks as though the Nowt2Do project will last for years.”
