Whitehead landfill site at Astley could get a 10 year extension
11:10am Wednesday 9th October 2013 in News
A LANDFILL site may be granted another 10 years of life if a planning application is approved.
Viridor, which owns the Whitehead site, wants to apply to extend the operational time of the existing landfill and reclamation site before it is restored to a natural environment.
The site is on former colliery spoil heaps south of the Bridgewater Canal at Astley and stretches from Lower Green Lane to Vicars Hall Lane at Boothstown.
The applicants will now take on board the comments made at a public consultation before submitting applications to Salford and Wigan Councils as it lies on the border between the two.
Company planning advisor Peter Wishart said: “The proposed planning application is a sensible solution to meeting the needs of the region over the next 10 to 15 years.
“Our focus on landfill is diminishing as alternative methods of waste treatment become available.
“We will be taking on board the comments and suggestions received before the application is finalised and submitted to the local authorities.”
