HUNDREDS of young trees have been planted across the area thanks to the Rotary Club of Astley.

Leigh Miners Rangers have planted more than 200 trees around the perimeter of the club with help from the Groundwork Trust.

As well as at the sports club, more than 100 trees have been planted at Cleworth Hall, including 40 oaks and hawthorns while rowans and silver birches have supplemented the existing broken hedgerow behind Tyldesley County Primary School.

Peter Rowlinson from the Rotary Club of Astley said: “The club has been keen to support environmental works and the area needs more trees to encourage wildlife and to look attractive. The range we have available will provide year round interest and benefit to wildlife.”

The planting is part of a national initiative by the Woodland Trust and over 500 similar packs are being distributed across the UK and two smaller schemes at St Stephens School and Crawford Avenue will be completed shortly.
