STUDENTS have got on their bikes to highlight the growing problem of food waste.

Members of Wigan & Leigh College Students’ Union organised a Five Aid event where students made smoothies using blenders powered by bikes and fruit that would have otherwise been thrown away.

The initiative marked the launch of Smart Green Scheme, a cross-college sustainability campaign for which the College received £80,000 in grants to promote green and sustainable activities from a NUS Student Green Fund.

Wigan & Leigh College’s student services manager, Roger Shearer, said: “This is our first major initiative after securing funding from the Smart Green Scheme and we wanted to do something to raise awareness of the growing problem of food waste as part of that.

“We were inspired by Feeding the 5000, a group which lobbies to try and combat the issue and decided to hold a lunch to show our student that most of the produce thrown away is still fit to eat. We hope it makes them think twice about their own eating habits and the food they waste.”
