TWO sisters are all set to lose their locks to support their mum in her battle against cancer.

Marie Hupton and Leanne Stevens decided to shave their hair after their mum Betty Waterworth discovered that the breast cancer she thought she had beaten returned.

When Betty was first diagnosed in 2009, she had a mastectomy to remove the cancerous cells, but the aggressive nature of the cancer now means she needs chemotherapy for the first time.

Marie, of Wayfarers Drive in Tyldesley, said: “Unlike before, my mum needs chemotherapy and this has meant she has lost her hair. We decided to support her by shaving our hair too, and thought we should try to raise some money as well.

“She had managed to beat it and then when she went for her five-year check-up, unfortunately she didn’t get the results she wanted.

“On top of that disappointment, she found it has spread to her lymph nodes and her neck and is much more aggressive than it was five years ago.

“The doctors are hopeful though. She will need treatment for the next year, including the chemotherapy, another drug and then radiotherapy, but we have to keep positive. The lump on her neck has already started to shrink.

“I am a mobile hairdresser, so one of my friends has offered to shave our hair for us and a pub has said we can do it there.

“I’m quite nervous but Betty’s husband Tom and all our friends and family have been so supportive.”

The siblings will have their hair shaved off at the Half Moon Inn on Elliot Street, in Tyldesley, on Sunday from 1pm, in an event they hope will top up the £650 they have already raised for The Christie.

Marie, aged 30, said: “The Christie has been so supportive and great at looking after mum. That’s why we decided to donate the money to them.”
