RESIDENTS are being warned to ignore phone calls offering them refunds on their council tax.

A number of residents have been contacted by a firm claiming they are working with Wigan Council and asking for personal information about their tax bands.

The council said such claims were false while Greater Manchester Police are urging people to report similar incidents on 101 with any details about the call.

Clr Terry Halliwell said: “Residents should not give any personal information out over the phone unless you are sure it is safe to do so. If you are uncertain, decline to answer the questions and check it out with us.”

Residents have also been contacted with letters and emails containing links to government websites so they appear legitimate.

People can contact the Valuation Office in Manchester for free to find out if they are paying the right amount or if they are owed a refund.
