A MOMENT was taken to remember the victims of genocide for Holocaust Memorial Day on Monday.

Students from Leigh Sixth Form College, pupils from St Anne's CE Primary School in Wigan and members of the public attended an event at Leigh Library to give readings and reflect on the atrocities of the Nazi concentration camps in the Second World War.

This year also marks the 20th anniversary of the genocide in Rwanda where approximately one million Tutsis and Hutus were murdered in 100 days.

Organiser Lynda Jackson, from the Museum of Wigan Life, said: “I’d like to thank everyone who came along to take part in the Holocaust Memorial Day commemoration at Leigh Library.

“These are important events which give us the opportunity to reflect on the atrocities of the Holocaust and make our own commitment to helping end persecution within our own communities.”
