POLICE are investigating a suspected arson attack in Leigh after a caravan was destroyed in a fire in the early hours of this morning.
Firefighters were called to a small camp of caravans on Plank Lane, Leigh, at about 2.45am.
The caravan was totally gutted and firefighters initially thought that someone was trapped inside.
It turned out that nobody was in the caravan, and the crew from Leigh Fire Station was able to extinguish the blaze in about ten minutes.
A fire service spokesman said: “We deployed a couple of hose reels and two of the lads were wearing breathing apparatus.
“Initially we feared someone was trapped inside which is why deployed three engines but this did not turn out to be the case.
“We believe the fire was started deliberately, by persons unknown.”
The matter has now been handed over to police.
