A FAMILY left devastated by the tragic death of a teenage girl have raised more than £50,000 in her memory.

The Love Leah campaign was set up by the family of 19-year-old Leah Davies, who died in a motorbike accident in August 2012.

The family, from Lowton, have so far raised £52,000 for the Home from Home Appeal, which hopes to raise £1 million to build relative accommodation at The Walton Centre in Liverpool.

Leah's mum Mandy Lawrenson said: "As well as raising money we have also been trying to raise awareness of how important being a blood and organ donor is.

"Leah had six blood transfusions in the week she was in intensive care before she died.

"The community's response has been amazing and we have been told the number of people on the organ donor list and the amount of people giving blood has risen in the area.

"The death of a young person is such a negative and devastating thing but it is so comforting to know that something positive has come out of Leah's death."

Leah's older sister Rachel, aged 22, is preparing to tackle the Three Peaks Challenge on April 9 supported by her colleagues at Virgin Media where she is a technician.

Leah died in a different hospital but would have been transferred to the brain specialist had she survived. The hospital is currently featuring in the Channel 5 series Brain Hospital.

Mandy added: "The hospital that Leah was in became a home from home and it was so important to us that we could stay and be with her all the time. We hope that through this appeal we can help other families have those same comforts."
