VOLUNTEERS have cleaned up an area of woodland on the edge of Lilford Park in Leigh.
The group collected more than 16 bags of litter - from the antique to the unmentionable - from the woods surrounding the Lions Bridge statue after it was falsely rumoured that the last remaining evidence of the Lions Bridge was to be moved to Haigh Hall.
A social media campaign then led to a call for volunteers to tidy up the area and The Friends of Lilford Park supplied bin bags, gloves and moral support on Saturday morning.
Chairman David Sykes said: "Thanks to everyone who turned up. You can be proud of the results and the wood is a picture again.
"We can’t wait for the bluebells to appear. We might even return and rebuild some of the bridge if we can find enough stones."
FOLP will hold its annual general meeting on April 15 at Patrick House on Leigh Road, Leigh, at 7pm and is looking for more members to help continue its work to clean up the park.
