VICTORY rolls and swing music have helped college students raise hundreds of pounds for charity.

A room at the Wigan and Leigh College’s Image Centre was taken back to the 1940s for a vintage tea party that saw students raise £320 for Help for Heroes.

As well as cream teas, students on the college’s hair and beauty management course transformed their clients into 1940s beauties by styling their hair, adding some vintage make-up and painting their nails.

Lecturer Sheena Lord, who helped organise the event, said: “The event was fabulous. We raised a great amount considering it was in a little room and there was only nine of us running it.

“Everybody really enjoyed it. Everyone - even the staff - got dressed up and the catering team put on some fantastic cream teas with lemon drizzle cake.

“It was a great experience for the students too and as part of their course they have to do a public relations module so instead of writing something we decided they should put their skills into practice.”

The hall at the Walmsley Road centre, which is dedicated to hair, beauty and holistic therapy, was decorated with authentic newspapers from the 1940s while music from the era added a fitting atmosphere.

“The room looked amazing and everyone was really stunned when they walked in,” Sheena said.

“We decided to donate to Help for Heroes because it fit in with the 1940s theme and it’s a great cause so I would like to thank Marks and Spencer, the Trading Post and Astley Driving Range for donating raffle prizes.

“We’re definitely going to hold a similar event next year but this time even bigger.”
