A NEWLY-formed regeneration trust is in need of help to save a Leigh landmark.

The Leigh Building Preservation Trust has been planning a project to restore and regenerate the historic Leigh Spinners mill since December.

But to do this, the trust needs funding and prove it has community backing.

“This incredible building is one of only a handful of Grade II listed buildings in the borough,” said Trevor Barton, chairman of the Trust.

It has formed part of the skyline of Leigh for a century, and we are keen to ensure it will play a big part in the town’s future.

“We’re not only looking at preserving the mill, but filling it with a range of community, arts, heritage and business uses that will contribute to the local economy.”

The Trust is in the process of preparing bids for the Heritage Lottery Fund and other organisations and is supported by the Prince’s Regeneration Trust.

Mr Barton said: “To secure funding we need to demonstrate the support of the community.

“So we’re appealing to people from Leigh and beyond to come along to our community consultation event.

“We want to hear as many views as possible about what should go into the mill, and we want everyone to have a say. The results of our consultation thus far with the Friends Group will be on display.

“Hopefully you can support some of these ideas or add any new ideas you feel could be located within the mill.”

The consultation event will be at Bedford High School between 6pm and 8pm on May 15.
