CELEBRATING their successful production of The Merry Widow at St Joseph’s Concert Hall in Leigh the Three Towns Operatic Society held their annual dinner last Friday at Leigh Cricket Club.

In recognition of an outstanding contribution to the life and work of the society, The Margaret Dakin Memorial Award was presented to Derek Morris by Society musical director. Derek a society member for 46 years and current treasurer involved with set construction and lighting, has been a committee member for many of those years.

Derek was also awarded life membership along with Bob Horrocks, a society member for 41 years, and current and previously and former chairman.

National Operatic and Dramatic Association long service awards were presented to Rupert Rees for 25 years, Edward Magenty for 15 years; and Kathryn Smethurst and Richard Lewis each with 10 years service.

Three Towns’ performances are accompanied by a professional orchestra and each year they award their Orchestra Trophy for an outstanding performance or interesting portrayal of a role. This year the award was presented to Sue Bradley for her flirtatious role with leading character, Danilo.

The Chorus Trophy was awarded to Keith Shatwell.

The Bas Barker Best Newcomer Trophy was awarded to Rosa Sanchez Garcia.

The society is now in rehearsal for its annual concert which will take place on Friday and Saturday November 21 and 22 at The Rose Centre formerly Lowton Civic Hall.
