CHILDREN from a Tyldesley school have read their own poems at a commemorative service.

The poems were written after the Tyldesley branch of the Royal British Legion visited St George’s Central Primary School in November to launch their annual Poppy Appeal.

The children were moved to write the poems which have now been printed in a book and each pupil read their own at a service at St George’s Church.

Head teacher Mark Grogan said: “What started out as a way of saying thank you to our visitors has now turned into a book and we have received letters of appreciation from Michael Gove and the Queen.

“The children read their poems with pride.”

Leigh MP Andy Burnham MP attended the service on Sunday and was so impressed he has arranged a further visit to the school to meet the children again.

The children were presented with a certificate and a copy of the book.
