AN TYLDESLEY day centre is under threat as part of an overhaul of adult social care in the borough.

A consultation was launched on Tuesday as part of Wigan Council’s new ‘Deal’, which suggests that up to four centres could be closed or redeveloped as part of the deal, with Fourways in Tyldesley earmarked for closure if the proposals are approved.

The council says it needs to make efficiency savings due to government cuts while providing the most relevant care for those with complex needs which can’t be met elsewhere and those who are vulnerable.

It argues that it wants to deliver these services at centres which are fit for purpose, in the right location and provided by specifically trained staff.

Clr Keith Cunliffe, cabinet member for adult social care and health at Wigan Council, said: “This new deal will help us to ensure we deliver the best possible level of personalised care for every individual.

“It has allowed us to rebalance the budget and adapt to ensure we invest sufficiently in services for older people to help cope with an ageing population while offering younger service users a chance to improve independence.

“Making efficiency savings is essential, but we believe it is possible to do this while transforming and modernising the services we provide along with improving the quality of the lives of service users.”

The council says it plans to work with individuals to ensure they are offered activities and services which meet their needs in a way that isn’t possible currently, and to give them greater independence while improving links to the community.

As part of a consultation into the proposals, service users, carers and council teams will be able to give feedback before a final decision is made later this year.
