A GRANDMOTHER has recalled the terrifying moment that she feared for her grandson’s life after he plunged face first into a pond.

Eleven-month-old Lincoln Currie was in his pram when he fell into the pond in the grounds of the Damhouse in Astley on Friday at 3pm.

Gran Janet Grundy was walking her dog Bella with Lincoln when another dog, who was not on a lead, attacked Bella and in the chaos that followed, the buggy plunged into the water.

She is concerned there is no fence or sign to warn people about how steep the embankment is and wants people to be aware of the potential danger. The dog came in between my legs and was trying to pick Bella up. I just tripped and watched as the buggy rolled down the embankment and landed face first in the water,” said Janet, aged 57.

“I jumped straight in after him and managed to turn the buggy round.

“I remember seeing a girl come over and thinking what a lovely white skirt she had on but she didn’t think twice – she jumped straight in and helped me lift Lincoln out in his pram.

“To this day I don’t know how we managed to lift the buggy up – I can’t normally lift it up my back step but Lincoln and I will forever be indebted to her.

“I tried to find her afterwards but she had gone back inside and I was told she was okay, but who knows From front page what would have happened if she hadn’t have helped.

“I can’t help but think ‘what if’.”

Lincoln was taken to hospital where he was checked over and given the all clear but Janet is all too aware of how much worse it could have been.

“I’ve heard it has happened before so I got in touch with one of the trustees of the Damhouse and asked about them putting up a fence around the pond,” explained Janet, of Manchester Road, Astley.

“The water is filthy and there are all kinds of bugs and rats in there but luckily Lincoln has come through it okay.

“I know that what happened was due to a dog off its lead but it could happen to anyone.

“Young children cycle so close to the pond because they are used to it and I’ve seen other women stop with their buggies close to the edge.

“I just want people to realise that it is dangerous.”
