ALEX and Paul West enjoyed some quality father and son time when they walked 192 miles from coast to coast together.

Alex had originally planned to go it alone on the walk but an injury meant he had to postpone and his worried mum then made 52-year-old Paul accompany him.

The pair are raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support after Alex’s granddad, Paul’s dad, died from cancer nine years ago.

“We probably walked a bit further than the 192 miles we were supposed to because we got lost a few times,” said Alex.

“Dad got tired quite a few times so I had to carry his pack as well as mine. I think he probably slowed me down a bit but it was nice having some company.”

It took prison escort Paul, who took two weeks holiday from work to accompany his son, and technician Alex 11 days to cover the distance, walking between 16 and 17 miles a day.

“It was a challenge. We had to carry all our food and tents in case we couldn’t find a hotel. One night we couldn’t find a hotel or a camp site so we had to sleep on a park bench,” added 21-year-old Alex.

“We both woke up at about 2am freezing cold and decided to walk to the next town to find a hotel.”

They walked from Cumbria, scaling the 2,560ft Kidsty Pike on their way, before conquering the hills of Yorkshire to reach the finish line.
