MILITARY standards have been stolen from an air cadets squadron.

A number of the ceremonial banners, which are used for parades on Remembrance Sunday and other civic occasions, were taken from outside the headquarters of 316 squadron on Windermere Road between 9.30pm on July 29 and 6.45pm on July 31.

The banners taken include the RAF standard, a white ensign, the 316 squadron banner, an army banner and a union flag.

Warrant officer Glenn Henry said: "These standards are of no monetary value to anyone else but will cost the squadron dear to replace.

"We've been quoted a replacement price of up to £4,000. They may not be covered by insurance and we must replace them in time for Remembrance Sunday.

"Any money which we have to spend on replacements will mean we have less money to spend on doing good things for the young people of this squadron and of this borough.

"We would be more than happy if the standards simply reappeared undamaged and no further questions would be asked."

The cadets rely on voluntary and charitable contributions and can frequently be seen taking part in collections, attending summer fetes and helping and parading at pensioners' and sporting events.

Police Con Paul Hardman said: "The training corps is a valuable part of the local community in Leigh and this has been a big blow to them.

"To replace the flags, it will cost around £3,000, money they cannot afford.

"Not only were the flags stolen but the poles were taken too.

"I would ask anyone who may have seen people walking off from the base with the property to call us as understandably, the cadets want them back."

Anyone with information should call police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
