GOLFERS braved torrential rain to help raise thousands of pounds for charity.

Astley Golf Society held a charity day at Whitefield Golf Club which saw more than 70 golfers head on to the course and raise £5,103 for The Christie.

The money was then doubled by Joseph Holt brewery as part of its appeal to raise £300,000 to build a reception area for a new procedures’ building at the Manchester hospital.

Ian Banner, president of the society, said: “We have all been touched by cancer in some way so when a woman at the Cart and Horses pub in Astley asked me if I could help organise something and told me it was for The Christie I agreed.

“The day went really well despite the sun shining before and after but there being a torrential downpour for the entire afternoon.

“It was a bit of a damp squib but the club put on some food and kept everyone happy.”
