A POP-up cafe has been making a little bit of leftover food go a long way.

Based at the old Bluecoat School in the shadow of the Wigan Parish Church, the Fur Clemt Cafe has been serving scores of eager shoppers and town-centre visitors throughout August.

The project is a partnership between Wigan-based charity The Brick, community cooking school Food Positive and the church itself.

Trish Green, general manager of The Brick, said: “We have opened the cafe to provide people with hot, healthy food during the day.

“We use food that has been donated by our supporters and we are also being helped by Sainsbury’s supermarket in the borough.

“Each day we pick up the food and then the people from Food Positive decide what they are going to make with it.

“The menu is always different but the outcome is still the same — lots of hungry people get fed in a really nice, relaxing environment.”

Trish says that the cafe helps to take pressure of the food bank during the summer months when they are regularly delivering up to 150 food parcels to people in need each week.
