A MUM lost her 19-year battle with cancer just days before her first grandchild was born.

Susan Hall died aged 68 on August 2 a few months after the cancer she had fought off for years spread to her liver and bones and 12 days before Emily Elfie Sue Hall was born.

Before she died, Sue, who lived in Pennington, had been organising a coffee morning for Macmillan Cancer Support with a friend with no idea she would not be around for it and her sons Mike and Chris, who are both sports presenters for Granada News, have decided to hold the morning in her memory.

“My mum was brilliant, just really lovely and very popular,” said 40-year-old Mike.

“She was diagnosed with breast cancer 19 years ago and battled it on and off through that time. She would have about three or four years clear and then it would come back.

“The number of times she had surgery to remove lumps was almost in double figures.

“Even though it was quite advanced and had spread to her liver and bones in the past couple of months we all still thought she would be here for a while yet.

“She missed out on meeting her first grandchild. I had to leave her funeral early because my wife had gone into hospital and Emily was born the next day.

“It was an incredibly strange day.”

Mike and 37-year-old Chris will also be holding a raffle at their coffee morning with prizes including a signed Robin Van Persie Manchester United shirt, a football signed by the match of the day team including Gary Lineker and tickets to the Coronation Street tour.

“We’re not the best in the kitchen but lots of friends and family have offered to help bake cakes and we’ve called in some favours to get the raffle prizes,” said Mike.

“My mum was originally aiming to raise £200 but so far we have raised more than £1,500 and we haven’t even held the event yet.”

The coffee morning is being held at Leigh Cricket Club on September 26 from 10am until 2pm and everyone is welcome.
