RESIDENTS are being warned not to be taken in by an email scam offering employment.

Wigan Council Trading Standards have received a report of the possible scam email from a Wigan resident.

The email claimed to be from a US based recruitment company who said they had seen her CV on the internet and wanted to offer her a job working from home. The resident had never put her CV on the internet so became suspicious and forwarded it to Trading Standards.

Trading Standards confirmed it was a scam and that if the resident had replied, then they would have asked for money before they could give her the job.

Julie Middlehurst, trading standards manager, said: “Trading Standards advises anyone who receives an unsolicited email to be very careful, as there are a number of these types of scam emails being sent to unsuspecting residents, which are all attempting to trick people out of money.

“Genuine job offers do not ask for money up front.”

Trading Standards advises residents to report any suspicious emails to to Action Fraud, the UK’s national reporting centre for fraud and internet crime, at actionfraud.police.uk/report_fraud.

If you are unsure if an email you receive is a scam, contact the Citizens Advice Consumer Service on the local rate number - 03454 04 05 06 for advice.
