SHOPPING in Leigh will get a £900,000 facelift making it fit for the future, it has been revealed.

As part of Wigan Council’s new deal for businesses, the investment aims to transform the town's main shopping street, with the outdoor market relocated from Albion Street to a central strip on Bradshawgate as part of the modernisation.

The proposals also include a new entrance to the indoor market and improved access to the outdoor market.

Albion Street and Bradshawgate will be revamped with trees being planted, roads being resurfaced and new lighting.

Shoppers have voiced concerns over the current location of Leigh outdoor market with the tall buildings and a canopy on the narrow street creating a wind tunnel effect.

Lord Peter Smith, leader of Wigan Council, said: "We all know people's shopping and leisure habits are changing.

"We've got to make sure our town centres are fit for the future and that's what this significant investment by the council is all about.

"This will be a total transformation of one of the most high profile parts of Leigh.

"It will create a new, open entrance to the indoor market and Spinning Gate Shopping Centre while providing a better home for the outdoor market.

"Bradshawgate and Albion Street will also be improved.

"Creating town centres that local people are proud of and which meet the needs of the local community is an important priority for the council.

The council has vowed to work with business owners and market traders to minimise disruption and the work, which is due to start next year, is expected to be completed by 2016.

Richard Waterfield, chairman of Wigan Forward Board and Waterfield's Bakers, said: "It's fantastic that the council is investing in our town centre in this way.

"This will complement the major external investment that is going into both Wigan and Leigh town centres in the next few years.

"It will increase footfall and provide an economic uplift to local businesses."
