A MOTORIST whose driving caused the death of a taxi driver and his young woman passenger wept in a court dock as he admitted responsibility.

Through his tears Dean Farrimond pleaded guilty to causing the deaths of Kenneth Grimshaw and Emma Houghton by driving dangerously on November 30 last year.

Farrimond, 35, of Eden Grove, Leigh, also pleaded guilty at Liverpool Crown Court to driving with excess alcohol.

Fifty-nine-year-old taxi driver Mr Grimshaw, of Twist Lane, Leigh, died at the scene from multiple injuries and Miss Houghton, 23, from Golborne, was taken to hospital with a serious head injury and died that evening.

They had been in a Ford Mondeo which was in collision with a Vauxhall Astra driven by Farrimond in Twist Lane, Leigh at the junction with Kendal Grove.

Defence barrister Barbara Webster asked for sentence to be adjourned to await a medical report and confirmation from the DVLA about Farrimond's clean driving licence.

"He is under no illusion but that there will be a lengthy sentence," she said and added that Farrimond, who sat holding his head in his hands, asked to be remanded in custody.

Recorder of Liverpool Judge Clement Goldstone remanded him in custody until November 7.
