A MAN is hoping to keep the momentum of the ice bucket challenge going by holding a charity pool night.

Dan Carty has organised what he hopes will become an annual pool challenge to raise money for the Motor Neurone Disease (MND) Association, the progressive disease that killed his dad John Daniel Carty, aged 66 in 2002.

A team from Leigh Cricket Club will take on a team from The Britannia pub on St Helens Road under Masconi Challenge Style rules with a trophy, donated by landlord Pete Taylor up for grabs for the winners.

Dan said: "I lost my dad to MND 12 years ago. Before that I was probably the same as everyone else before the ice bucket challenge in that I was very naive about MND.

"What I found out when I got involved with the association is that the main reason it exists is to raise awareness.

"It is a terminal incurable disease and a dreadful way to lose somebody."

Millions of pounds were raised for the association when the ice bucket challenge - where people threw freezing cold water over themselves before nominating friends to do likewise - swept social media but Dan doesn't want the disease to be forgotten about again.

"I wanted to hold an event on the back of the ice bucket challenge which lasted about three to four weeks when social media was awash with it," said the 48-year-old.

"This is the quiet after the storm and I want to keep the momentum going."

If the event is a success it will be held at Leigh Cricket Club next year for a different charity.

Dan, of Parkedge Close, said: "I am very grateful to Pete for this fabulous and generous suggestion. We hope to raise as much as possible to help fight this desperately cruel terminal and incurable disease."

The event is taking place on Sunday with the first break at 3.30pm (after the Manchester derby).
