RESIDENTS will be able to have their say on three different options for traffic management for the guided busway works on Astley Street at a public meeting.

Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) is working with Leigh MP Andy Burnham, Wigan Council and Balfour Beatty to host the meeting at 12pm on November 8 (the venue is to be confirmed) to outline the preferred option for traffic management.

TfGM has presented a series of options for the Astley Street closure to politicians and have stated a preference for a works programme that would reduce the amount of time it would need to be closed.

TfGM’s head of programme management services, Peter Boulton, said: “Our shared concern here is that the works at Astley Street and along the busway in general are carried out in a way that limits the impact in the area and on the community.

“We’ve clearly explained to politicians the pros and cons of several different options for managing traffic while we work at Astley Street and they have now asked us to share that thinking with the public and hear their views.”

As a result, the current plan is to carry out work while a single lane running out of Tyldesley town centre is closed followed by a three-week full street closure while a United Utilities divert a water and the road is resurfaced.

The work on Astley Street is due to start in December once Hough Lane has fully reopened.

Clr Stephen Hellier, ward member for Tyldesley, said: “A lot of hard work has been going on behind the scenes to make improvements and to ensure residents’ views are being listened to.

“The works in Tyldesley town centre start soon but won’t be too disruptive because in the main they will be away from the highway network area.

“I’d also like to stress that Market Square and Hough Lane will be accessible for the Remembrance Sunday service and procession.”
