WIGAN Council services will be put in the spotlight by a live tweetathon.

The council will be among thousands nationwide to tweet using the hashtag #OurDay on Wednesday to give residents an insight into the 700 services it provides.

The day has been organised by the Local Government Association (LGA), which represents councils in England and Wales, and the Knowledge Hub.

The LGA is encouraging as many councillors and local authority staff as possible to take a couple of minutes out of their day to tell the world what they’re up to as part of a 24-hour live tweetathon.

Leader of Wigan Council Lord Peter Smith said: “Every day our staff work tirelessly to provide residents with hundreds of services, many of which people may be unaware of.

“Councils are not just responsible for fixing potholes and taking away rubbish but for many vital services which keep our communities glued together and #OurDay is a chance for residents to get a glimpse into the vital work we do in our communities.

“It’s important that we’re open and transparent and explain how we spend taxpayers’ money. The aim of #OurDay is to cast light of what the council does day in day out.”
